Saltwater & corrosion

Does saltwater actually get inside a marine engine?

Not into the oil sump on a healthy four-stroke outboard, but salt reaches almost everything else — the cooling passages, the powerhead exterior, the midsection and the lower unit. The bigger internal risk in a Gulf Coast engine is not salt in the oil but moisture: humid air drawn in during cool-down condenses inside the crankcase, and that water combines with combustion byproducts to form acids that attack bearing surfaces. This is why a boat that runs fifteen hours a season in Texas can show more internal corrosion than one that runs a hundred hours in a dry climate.

Why does my outboard look corroded when I flush it every time?

Flushing removes salt from the cooling passages but does nothing about the salt film left on external surfaces or the humid air inside the engine. Freshwater flushing is necessary and worth doing every trip, but it addresses only one of three exposure paths — cooling system, external surfaces, and internal condensation. External corrosion is handled with rinse-and-protect products; internal corrosion is handled by the oil's ability to neutralize acids and resist moisture, which is a function of the oil's formulation rather than how thoroughly you flush.

Is synthetic oil actually worth it for a saltwater boat?

The case for synthetic in a marine engine rests on moisture and acid control more than on wear reduction. Storage & seasonal layup

Should I change my boat oil before or after winter storage?

Change it before storage, not after. Used oil holds acids, fuel dilution and moisture, and leaving that mixture sitting against bearings and cylinder walls for months is where a great deal of off-season corrosion damage happens. Draining it and refilling with fresh oil before layup means the engine sits with clean oil and a full additive package. On the Gulf Coast this matters more than in cold climates, because our layup periods coincide with high humidity rather than freezing dry air.

My boat sits on a lift for months at a time. What is that doing to it?

Extended idle time in Gulf humidity does more damage to most engines than running them does. Each temperature swing cycles humid air through the crankcase and fuel system, condensing moisture that pools in low spots, and without running hours to burn it off, that moisture stays. The engines we see with the worst internal condition are almost never the high-hour ones — they are the low-hour boats that sat. If a boat is going to sit, the two highest-value interventions are fresh oil going into storage and fuel treatment to keep ethanol from separating.

Do I need to do anything if my boat stays in the water year-round?

Year-round in-water boats trade layup risk for running-hours risk, so the service emphasis shifts rather than disappears. Along the middle and lower Texas coast, boats commonly run most of the year and accumulate engine hours far faster than a seasonal boat, which means the interval that matters is hours-based rather than calendar-based. Check the hour meter against your engine manufacturer's stated interval, and remember that a boat kept in salt water still needs the lower unit inspected for water intrusion regardless of how often it runs.

Ethanol & fuel problems

Why is ethanol fuel such a problem in boats specifically?

Ethanol attracts water, and boat fuel systems are vented to humid air in a way car fuel systems are not. Ethanol-blended gasoline absorbs moisture until it reaches saturation, at which point the ethanol and water separate out and settle to the bottom of the tank as a corrosive layer that the fuel pickup draws first. Boats are especially exposed because they sit for long periods with partially full tanks in high humidity — precisely the conditions that cause phase separation.

What does a fuel additive actually do for a boat that sits?

A marine fuel additive's main job in a stored boat is stabilizing the fuel and keeping the fuel system clean while the engine is not running. AMSOIL Quickshot is formulated to address ethanol-related problems and to clean injectors and carburetors in small engines and marine applications. It does not reverse phase separation that has already occurred — once water has dropped out of suspension, the fuel has to be dealt with physically — so additives are preventive rather than corrective.

Should I run my tank empty or full before storing the boat?

Store it full, with treated fuel. A nearly empty tank leaves a large volume of humid air above the fuel, and every temperature cycle condenses more moisture into it — which in an ethanol blend accelerates phase separation. A full tank minimizes that air space. The exception is if you know the fuel is already old or contaminated, in which case getting it out is better than preserving it.

Oil change intervals

How often should I change the oil in a Gulf Coast boat?

Follow your engine manufacturer's stated interval for hours, but treat the calendar interval as the binding one if the boat sits, because moisture accumulates with time rather than with use. Most marine manufacturers specify both an hours figure and an annual figure, and Gulf Coast boats frequently hit the annual limit long before the hours limit. Check your owner's manual for the specific numbers for your engine — they vary meaningfully between manufacturers and model years, and no dealer should be giving you a figure that overrides your manufacturer's.

Does synthetic oil let me go longer between changes in a boat?

In a marine application, extended intervals are generally not the reason to choose synthetic — corrosion and moisture protection are. Your engine manufacturer's interval is tied to warranty coverage, and in a humid climate the limiting factor is usually contamination from condensation rather than degradation of the oil itself. The practical benefit of a premium synthetic in a Gulf Coast boat is better protection within the manufacturer's interval, not permission to stretch past it.

Lower units & gear lube

How do I know if water got into my lower unit?

Drain a little gear lube and look at it — water contamination usually shows as a milky, coffee-with-cream appearance rather than clear amber, and badly contaminated lube may separate visibly. Check the drain plug magnet for metal at the same time. Water gets in through failed prop shaft or driveshaft seals, and on the Texas coast that is a routine wear item rather than a rare failure, especially on trailer boats that are submerged and pulled repeatedly.

What happens if I keep running a lower unit with water in the gear lube?

Water displaces the lubricant film on the gear teeth and bearings, and once that film breaks down, gear and bearing wear accelerates quickly — lower unit rebuilds are among the more expensive marine repairs. Some gear lubes are formulated to keep protecting when water intrusion has occurred; AMSOIL states its marine gear lube protects against wear even with up to 15% water contamination, tested per ASTM D3233 and D892. That tolerance buys you time to find and fix the seal, but it is not a substitute for fixing it.

How often should lower unit oil be changed on a saltwater boat?

Most marine manufacturers specify annually or at a set hours interval, whichever comes first, and saltwater boats have little reason to stretch it because the drain is also your inspection opportunity. Pulling the gear lube once a season is how seal failure gets caught before it becomes a rebuild. Consult your owner's manual for your engine's specified interval.
